Los Angeles offers an incredible variety of engagement photo locations. From historic estates and botanical gardens to coastal cliffs and cinematic city streets, each part of the city offers a different atmosphere for photos.
Choosing the right setting helps shape the entire feeling of your engagement session. Some couples are drawn to architectural locations like Pasadena City Hall or Greystone Mansion, while others prefer the ocean views of Malibu or the energy of Downtown Los Angeles.
If you're planning engagement photos in Los Angeles, the location plays a big role in creating photos that feel personal, natural, and memorable.
Over the past five years and more than 50 engagement sessions, I’ve explored many of the locations that photograph beautifully across the city. Some are iconic landmarks, while others are quiet spots you’d only find by spending time exploring Los Angeles.
Below are some of my favorite engagement photo locations along with helpful tips for when to go and what to expect.
How I Help Couples Choose the Right Engagement Location
Every engagement session starts with a conversation.
I usually ask couples a few simple questions:
• how did you meet
• what places feel meaningful to you
• what kind of atmosphere you’re drawn to — city, nature, architecture, or coastline
Some couples arrive with location ideas already. Others simply share the feeling they want their photos to have.
From there, I help narrow down locations that fit the story of their relationship. Sometimes that means choosing somewhere iconic, and other times it means discovering a place that feels unexpected but perfect for their photos.
If a location is new to me, I scout it beforehand or study it closely so I know exactly how the light moves through the space.
The goal is always the same: creating a location and experience that feels natural for you.

Iconic Engagement Photo Locations in Los Angeles
Some locations consistently photograph beautifully because of their architecture, views, or atmosphere. These are some of my favorite engagement photo locations across Los Angeles.
Greystone Mansion — Elegant European Estate
Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills is one of the most elegant engagement photo locations in Los Angeles.
The stone architecture, gardens, fountains, and tall cypress trees create a setting that feels almost like a European estate tucked into the hills of Los Angeles.
Photography permits are required.
Typical permit pricing is about:
• $399 per hour for non-Beverly Hills residents
• reduced pricing for Beverly Hills residents
The best time to photograph here is usually around 3–4pm, when the light begins to soften and move through the gardens and staircases.
Griffith Observatory — Views of Los Angeles
Griffith Observatory is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Los Angeles and offers incredible views of the city skyline.
The architecture combined with the open hilltop landscape creates a cinematic setting for engagement photos.
My favorite time to photograph here is sunrise.
Because of the elevation, mornings sometimes bring low clouds that move through the hills, creating a soft and atmospheric backdrop. Sunrise also means fewer crowds and easier parking.
Sunset can also be beautiful, but the area becomes much busier and traffic can be difficult, especially on weekends.
The Huntington Library — Botanical Gardens
The Huntington Library in San Marino is one of the most visually stunning garden locations in Southern California.
Between the Japanese gardens, botanical landscapes, and historic architecture, it feels like multiple photo locations within one estate.
Photography sessions require a reservation.
Typical pricing includes:
• $1,200 base fee for groups up to five people
• $300 security deposit
While the permit is expensive, the Huntington staff coordinate the session and allow access to multiple garden areas without heavy crowds.
Pasadena City Hall — Classic Architecture
Pasadena City Hall is one of the most popular engagement photo locations for couples who love architecture.
The arches, domes, and courtyard create a timeless backdrop that photographs beautifully in soft afternoon light.
A permit is usually not required, though weekends often bring multiple photographers shooting there at the same time.
Weekdays tend to be quieter.
El Matador Beach — Malibu Cliffs
El Matador Beach in Malibu is one of the most dramatic coastal engagement photo locations near Los Angeles.
The cliffs, sea caves, and rock arches create beautiful compositions during sunset.
Things to keep in mind:
• the beach requires walking down steep stairs
• tides affect access to the rock arches
• state park photography permits may be required
Sunset is typically the best time to photograph here.
Santa Monica Pier — Playful Engagement Photos
Santa Monica Pier offers a completely different energy compared to quiet gardens or estates.
The colorful rides, lights, and ocean views create a fun atmosphere for engagement photos.
Two great times to photograph here are:
• sunset, when the pier is full of sun glow
• night, when the rides and lights are glowing
Los Angeles Arboretum — Botanical Garden Setting
The Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia offers beautiful gardens, historic architecture, and open landscapes.
Photography permits are typically around $75 per hour.
The Arboretum is a great option for couples who want nature, greenery, and peaceful walking paths for their engagement photos.
Kenneth Hahn Park — Sunset City Views
Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area offers incredible views of Los Angeles along with wide grassy hills and quiet walking paths.
Because the park is large, it helps to choose a specific location ahead of time and scout it before the shoot.
Sunset here can be especially beautiful.
If shooting on weekends, it’s best to arrive early since parking fills up quickly.
The park closes at 6pm so be mindful of the timing when shooting here.
LACMA Urban Lights — Night Engagement Photos
Urban Lights at LACMA is one of the most recognizable photography spots in Los Angeles.
While the installation looks beautiful during sunset, it becomes especially striking at night when the lights are illuminated.
This location works well for couples who want something creative and editorial.
Mulholland Drive Overlooks — Dramatic City Views
Mulholland Drive has several scenic overlooks with incredible views of Los Angeles.
One of my favorite photo spots is near these coordinates:
34.12825° N, 118.34063° W
From here you can photograph couples with sweeping views of the city below.
Sunset sessions work especially well here.
Getty Villa — Mediterranean Architecture
The Getty Villa feels like stepping into an Italian coastal museum.
The architecture, courtyards, and gardens make it perfect for couples who love European-inspired settings.
Reservations are required in advance, and photography is typically limited to outdoor areas.
UCLA Campus — Historic Architecture in Westwood
The UCLA campus in Westwood is a beautiful option for engagement photos, especially for couples who love classic architecture. Areas around Royce Hall feature Romanesque Revival design, with brick buildings, arches, and elegant stairways that create a timeless look.
Within a short walk you can photograph around Royce Hall, the library steps, and nearby courtyards, which makes it easy to capture different looks in one session. In most cases, permits are not required for casual engagement photography, which makes UCLA a convenient architectural location in Los Angeles.
Restaurant & Cocktail Bar Engagement Photos in Los Angeles
Some of the most memorable engagement sessions happen in places that already feel natural to a couple — restaurants, cocktail bars, or a favorite date-night spot.
These locations create a completely different atmosphere compared to parks or beaches. Instead of focusing on landscapes, the photos capture the feeling of a night out together: sharing a drink, laughing at the bar, or sitting across from each other in a quiet booth.
Restaurant and cocktail bar sessions tend to feel more editorial and cinematic, especially when the lighting is low and the space has interesting textures like vintage wood, neon signs, or candlelight.
Some of my favorite places in Los Angeles for this type of engagement session include:
• LAVO
• Donna’s in Echo Park
• Rainbow Bar & Grill in West Hollywood
Hotels can also work beautifully for this style of shoot. Some great options include:
• The Normandie Hotel
• Roosevelt Hotel
• The O Hotel
• The Edmon
• Ayres Hotel Manhattan Beach
These spaces allow couples to interact naturally with the environment, which often leads to candid moments that feel relaxed and genuine.
For restaurant and bar locations, it's always important to reach out ahead of time to confirm their photography policy. Some venues allow quick portrait sessions during slower hours, while others may require permission from management or a small location fee.
When couples are interested in this type of engagement session, I help coordinate with the venue beforehand so everything runs smoothly on the day of the shoot.
Creative Engagement Photo Locations Around Los Angeles
Los Angeles also offers plenty of unexpected locations for couples who want something more urban or creative.
Some great options include:
• Downtown Los Angeles bridges
• The Row rooftop views
• Arts District murals
• Little Tokyo
• Chinatown
• Elysian Park
• Los Angeles River paths
These areas can create photos that feel spontaneous and cinematic.
Best Time of Year for Engagement Photos in Los Angeles
Los Angeles has great weather year-round, but certain seasons tend to create especially beautiful light.
March through June often bring comfortable temperatures and soft evening light.
Winter can also be a great time for engagement sessions, particularly for indoor locations like restaurants or cocktail bars when the city is quieter after the holidays.
Sunrise vs Sunset Engagement Sessions
Both sunrise and sunset create beautiful engagement photos depending on the location.
Sunrise sessions offer:
• fewer crowds
• softer light
• calmer environments
Sunset sessions offer:
• warmer tones
• dramatic skies
• lively city atmosphere
Busy locations like Griffith Observatory or Santa Monica Pier often feel much calmer early in the morning.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should we schedule our engagement photo session in Los Angeles?
I usually recommend reaching out at least two months in advance. That gives us enough time to plan everything properly — choosing the right location, checking whether permits are required, and deciding on outfits that fit the setting.
It also gives us time to build the session around your ideas instead of rushing the process. Engagement sessions work best when we have space to plan them thoughtfully.
How many locations can we include during our engagement session?
My engagement sessions are typically 90 minutes, which can comfortably include one location or sometimes two if they’re close to each other.
For example, some couples start with an hour at Greystone Mansion, then finish nearby at UCLA’s campus for sunset photos. Another option is shooting on the Santa Monica beach and then finishing with playful photos at the pier once the lights come on.
When locations are close together, it allows us to create more variety without losing time driving.
How do we choose between a beach, city, or garden location for our engagement photos?
The best location usually reflects your personality and the places you naturally enjoy spending time together.
If you love the ocean, a beach session might feel the most natural. If you enjoy date nights in the city, restaurants or downtown locations might be a better fit. And if you’re drawn to nature or architecture, gardens and historic estates can create a beautiful setting.
Another approach some couples take is choosing a location that reflects their wedding. For example, if you're planning a European-style garden wedding, photographing your engagement session at a place like Greystone Mansion or the Huntington Library can tie the whole story together.
What should we wear for engagement photos depending on the location?
What you wear should match the atmosphere of the location.
For beach sessions, I usually recommend something relaxed and flowy — outfits that move well and that you don’t mind getting a little sandy.
For architectural or estate locations, darker tones like black can feel timeless and elegant, while more fashion-forward pieces like structured dresses or longer silhouettes can add a beautiful editorial feel.
We’ll also plan outfits together. Once the session is booked, I send a guide that helps with outfit ideas, styling suggestions, and what photographs best in different locations.
Do we need to coordinate with restaurants, bars, or hotels before our engagement session?
Yes, it’s always best to reach out to the venue ahead of time.
Some restaurants, bars, and hotels are happy to allow quick portrait sessions during slower hours, while others may require permission from management or a small location fee.
I usually recommend that couples reach out themselves because venues are often more accommodating to guests or customers who plan to dine there and leave a review. Once we know the venue’s guidelines, we can plan the shoot accordingly.
Can we include personal elements like champagne, a vintage car, or our dog?
Absolutely. Personal elements can add a lot of personality to your photos.
Things like champagne, a classic car, or bringing your dog can create playful moments and make the session feel more like a real experience rather than a posed shoot.
We just want to make sure the location allows it. Some parks or venues have restrictions, so it’s always best to talk through those ideas beforehand so we can plan them in the right setting.
What happens if the location becomes crowded during the shoot?
Crowds can happen in popular locations, but there are a few ways we work around that.
One is choosing the right time of day. For example, places like Griffith Observatory can be very busy at sunset but much quieter at sunrise.
During the session itself, I also move us through different areas of the location to find quieter spots. And if there are small distractions in the background, I can often remove them during editing so the final photos still feel clean and focused on you.
Will you guide us during the engagement session if we’re not used to being photographed?
Yes — guiding couples is a big part of how I approach engagement sessions.
Before we start shooting, I usually explain what the session will feel like so you know what to expect. During the shoot, I give prompts, movement-based directions, and gentle poses that help you relax and interact naturally with each other.
I also look at the inspiration photos you send beforehand and incorporate elements you like so the session feels familiar and comfortable.
The goal is always for the experience to feel easy and natural, even if you’ve never been in front of a camera before.

"We used Rene for our engagement shoot, and the photos were stunning. They were natural, emotional, and beautifully candid without ever feeling forced or overly posed. He has an amazing ability to capture real moments in a way that feels authentic and timeless."
