Santa Barbara Courthouse Elopement Photographer

For couples choosing intimacy over spectacle. Documentary storytelling and editorial portraits at the Mural Room, Sunken Gardens, and the spaces in between.

WHY THE COURTHOUSE

A Building Built for Elopements

The Santa Barbara County Courthouse isn't a courthouse in the way most people think of one. Spanish-Colonial architecture, hand-painted ceilings in the Mural Room, the rotunda staircase with its tiled archways, the Sunken Gardens stretching toward palm trees and the ocean beyond. Couples who choose to elope here aren't settling for a quick civil ceremony — they're choosing one of the most photogenic places in California to get married.

What makes a courthouse elopement work is intentionality. Ceremony windows are short, the property is busy, and the light moves quickly. Working with a photographer who knows the building changes how the day flows — fewer crowds in the background of your portraits, better timing on golden hour, a clear plan for moving between spaces without rushing.

I've photographed elopements at the Mural Room, the Sunken Gardens, the rotunda staircase, the balcony, and the rooftop. Each space has its own light, its own pace, and its own best portrait spots. Knowing them in advance is what lets you actually be present during your ceremony instead of worrying about logistics.

WHAT TO EXPECT

A Typical Santa Barbara Courthouse Elopement

Every elopement looks a little different. Some couples want a 30-minute ceremony in the Mural Room and a quiet dinner after. Others want the full day — getting ready at Hotel Californian, the ceremony, portraits across the courthouse complex, a vintage trolley around town, and a reception at State & Fig. Both are equally beautiful, and both are completely yours.

Here's what a 4-hour Santa Barbara courthouse elopement typically looks like:

3:00 PM

Getting ready & Details

Final touches at your hotel or a nearby getting-ready location. Bridal portraits, dress and ring detail shots, the quiet anticipation before the day shifts.

4:00 PM

First look & Portraits

A first look on the courthouse balcony or in the Sunken Gardens — depending on light and crowd levels. This is where the day starts to slow down and feel real.

4:30 PM

Ceremony

At the Mural Room, the Sunken Gardens, or one of the private spaces inside the building. Civil ceremonies are typically 10–15 minutes.

5:00 PM

Post-ceremony portraits & family photos

Family portraits in the gardens or on the steps. Then we move into couple portraits across the property — the rotunda staircase, the balcony, the outdoor stairs, and the rooftop if light allows.

5:30 PM

Golden hour portraits

The hour before sunset is when the courthouse glows. Sunken Gardens portraits, vintage car shots through the Mission district, or quiet moments in spaces most couples never see.

6:30 PM

Dinner

A reception at State & Fig, an intimate dinner at a meaningful restaurant, or a celebration at your hotel. I document the toasts, the cake, the first dance — whatever the day calls for.

7:00 PM

Coverage ends

Your final gallery will be a complete narrative of the day — from the quiet getting-ready moments to the last golden-hour portrait.

This is one possible flow. The 2-hour City Hall Elopement collection is built for couples who want the ceremony and immediate portraits. The 4-hour collection covers the full arc above.
